Patagonia. from "patagones", Fernando de Magellanes.
On the 7th of November I embarked on Le Soleal, a cruise ship owned and operated by La Compagnie du Ponant. We left sunny and warm Valparaiso to explore the fjords of Patagonia for 13 days.
After two days at sea, we reached the chilean archipelago of Chiloe, and spent the afternoon at Quemchi, a typical village of the pacific chilean coast where it can rain up to 10 000 mm per year!
We continued our way south and finally encountered some incredible glaciers! What a joy! As this was an expedition cruise, we took the zodiacs out as much as possible and got close and personnal with these beasts of ice. I also got the opportunity to give a series of talks to our guests about glaciers, and the impact of climate change on this region.
Patagonia is not immune to climate change, even though glaciers in this region receive large amounts of precipitation, most of them are rapidly retreating. After another frogleap south, we reached Torres Del Paine and its incredible Laccolith!
We're now in Ushuaia for a few days, enjoying the uniqueness of a town at the end of the world. More adventures coming soon!
